“That was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.
