Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
